Hi Trent,
ReplyDeleteI was thinking of writing an app like iHearIt, but thankfully thought to check the App Store first. Is WiFi the only way to get the piece I want to practice onto my iPhone? I don't have a WiFi network setup. Can't I just sync my phone with an iTunes playlist containing the .mp3 file?
Hi Mike,
ReplyDeleteI wish it weren't so, but wifi is currently the only way, and it's an Apple restriction. Sorry. Access for third party apps to the iPod library (which is where songs go when you sync with iTunes) is too limited for us to do what we need for iHearit (namely, generating the waveform image and slowing the song down).
For a workaround, you could pick up a cheap wifi router for $20-30, or you can email the song(s) to yourself and put it on to iHearit from a friends place / workplace with wifi.
Perhaps with iPhone OS 4.0 Apple might be a little less restrictive...
Best regards,
Trent
Thanks for your quick response. That's pretty disappointing. I have to send a file from *my* computer to *my* phone over the ether, when the latter is sitting in the cradle wired to the former? My iPod can function as a USB disk. Too bad the iPhone doesn't seem to have that capability.
ReplyDeletePerhaps letting Apple know your opinion (as I have) that this policy does not seem justified may have an effect.

Thanks for your support,

I just sent them a note, with you CC'd on it. I'm not holding my breath, but maybe they'll take pity on me!
ReplyDeleteHi Mike,
ReplyDeleteThere is a new feature in iOS4 to upload songs to apps via iTunes. iHearit will be taking advantage of this feature soon, once we re-work our directory structure. If you've held out buying a wifi router this long, you might as well wait a couple weeks more :)
Great app! Very useful for nailing those tricky guitar riffs. I have three suggestions / requests...
ReplyDelete1) the addition of some placeholders / markers that could be attached to an absolute position on the waveform would be very useful in keeping track of sections of music when zooming in / out.
2) an iPad version that used the larger screen res would be great
3) the ability to change pitch ( ie music key) as well as tempo would be fantastic
Many thanks, Nick
Hi Nick - thanks for your message.
ReplyDeleteRe #1) the timeline on the top fulfills this exact purpose for me, but what are you imagining - coloured flags or something? What I like about the timeline is that it's size and position on the screen are always static but it is also scaling in detail depending on how far you zoom in. With the small screen on an iPhone / iTouch, I'm trying to keep visual clutter to a minimum. Which leads me to your next point...
Re #2) are you using an iPad? I could see your first suggestion working better in this context, so I'll think about it here. If you are using an iPad, what kinds of other on screen elements would be most useful.
#3) this is on my list for sure, but is probably going to come sometime after moveable loop points.
Thanks for buying iHearit, and I look forward to hearing back from you.
Trent
Hi Trent
ReplyDeleteYou are right of course - the timeline does give you that absolute position in the track. I guess I'm more of a pictures person rather than a numbers person - or perhaps I'm just lazy!
What I envisaged was perhaps a button to turn marker placement on/off. Then tap to add and tap ( or double tap) to remove one of, say four, colured markers which might be a vertical bar similar to your cursor but maybe with a flag or arrow head at the top.
If I am studying a song and jumping between an intro and a lead break later in the song, it sometimes takes me a little while to get the section to be looped positioned right. Also I find I sometimes zoom in or out too much (fat fingers !) and markers would help correct this more quickly.
I am using an iPad and find that it is becoming my sole practice tool. Now that I am using iHearIt I have just about everything I need on it. I can play backing tracks and reference tracks, view music and lyrics (as PDF), look up guitar fingerings, and now slow down and loop sections of music. However, sometimes when practicing a song which has been recorded in a different key, it would be great to be able to chmage the pitch of a recording by a few semi-tones either way.
Hope this all makes sense !

Trent,
ReplyDeleteThis is weird, but since the above discussion about using the timeline, the timeline has now disappeared when I am using iHearIt. Is there some way to turn it on and off ?
Now I think about it, I'm pretty sure that there have been other times when it has not appeared when I've been practicing.
N
Hmm - this is the first I've heard of it, and I've never seen it. But I don't have an iPad either. I know that if you zoom in to 1 second it's possible to only see number on the timeline (seconds are the smallest unit it goes down to). Is this what's happening? If not, please take a screenshot (I assume you can do this like on an iPhone?) and send it to me at trent@trentreschny.com
ReplyDeleteCheers,
Trent
Hi Trent,
ReplyDeletethis is a great app! I am trying to use it for slowing down songs for dancing (for instance, while learning jive, it helps to back off from the 170 bpm tempo a bit :). Would it be possible to make the slowing down control a bit more advanced? Right now I have no idea by how much I am slowing down the song other than counting the beats myself.
Thanks!
